  • Yes. All pets that reside in the city limits of Kaufman must be registered with the city. 

    Each dog and cat must be registered with the City of Kaufman Animal Services Division once it reaches three months of age. A current metal registration tag will be issued, and this tag must be affixed to a collar or harness and worn at all times. Documentation of a current rabies vaccination is required at the time of registration.

    The fee to register a pet is $5 . Registration is valid for 12 months from the date of issuance. Registrations can be obtained at Kaufman City Hall..

    The following animals are exempt from the registration requirement:

    • Dogs owned by a law enforcement agency
    • Dogs trained to assist a person with a disability

    Additional Details

    • Rabies vaccination: Each dog and cat must be vaccinated by a licensed veterinarian upon reaching the age of three months and must be revaccinated annually.
    • Number of Animals: Residents are limited to three adult dogs and one litter of puppies up to six months of age for a maximum of 10 dogs. Residents may also have up to three adult cats.
    • Animal Confinement: Pets must be confined by a fence or lead system of sufficient strength to prevent the animal’s escape. If left outdoors, pets must have access to water and shelter at all times. Animals found confined in a cruel manner may be seized.
    • Animal Nuisances: It is unlawful to keep an animal in such a manner that it creates a nuisance by reason of excessive noise (barking), odors, flies, disease, or unsightly appearance.
    • Exotic, Wild &/or Dangerous Animals: Exotic, wild, or dangerous animals are prohibited. Examples include, but are not limited to:
      • Any poisonous or dangerous reptile
      • Ferrets
      • Foxes
      • Leopards
      • Lions
      • Lynx
      • Panthers
      • Skunks
      • Tigers
      • Any other animal for which there is no approved rabies vaccine

  • No. State law requires all pets be kept on a "lead, trolley, or pulley system" that is a minimum of 10 feet in length. Think of a laundry line in your backyard, your dog must be able to run the length of the laundry line by having him attached to it by a cable with a clip. (Health & Safety Code 821.077)
